Remembering on Senior Night: Traci Brumwell

Editor's note: As Dutton/Brady seniors commemorate their last home games on Senior Night, much is on their minds about how where they've been, where they're going and what the community has meant to them as they get ready to graduate. This week on the Dutton Country Courier we're featuring essays from seniors as they reminisce and look forward.

Graduating classes in small towns vary greatly in size, but the friendships made are always huge. I have had the privilege of having a small class and making five great friends that I will never forget. Three of us have been together for the past thirteen long years and the other two have been here for the hectic years of high school.

Cody, Carissa, and I started together way back in kindergarten and together have slowly watched our class size diminish from the original eleven to the graduating five. We have been through thick and thin together. I am not going to say that things have always been perfect, that we never fought, and that we always hung out together; because that is not true and no one is ever that perfect. We have always gotten along and been friends, but let me tell you there have been a number of fights and words exchanged – just like a family. However, after every battle we always made up and resumed our fun together.

Pep Club Hosts Speech/Drama Night

Dutton Country Courier

Pep Club will be hosting a Speech/Drama Night on January 14, 2008 at 6:00 PM in the Power School Cafeteria. This is your opportunity to see all the Power/Dutton/Brady “speeches” perform their competition pieces for the 2007-2008 year. Mrs. Sims, the coach, will explain to the group what each event is, how it is judged and a little bit about each student. It is a great night to show your support for this team and to give them a public practice before Divisional competition. Dessert and a cold drink will be served. Come, bring a friend and be enlightened by the students’ abilities.

School Board Mulling Campus Closure

By Tim Tharp, Superintendent Dutton-Brady Schools
Dutton Country Courier

The first thing I can tell you right now is that we just might be able to keep running with two buildings open through 2008-2009, but almost certainly can’t manage it financially beginning in 2009-2010.

The numbers I have reported to you in the past have been confirmed to be within $2,000 of actual funding by the Office of Public Instruction. There are quite a bit of variables that could still come into play, but it certainly gets us in the ballpark.

However, I learned something interesting. With taxpayer approval, we could run a levy next year to maintain this year’s current level of funding. This would mean the over $80,000 loss in budget authority could be balanced out by local tax increases IF you were to pass a levy for that amount. The Board of Trustees will need them to make a decision by the February board meeting so we can make plans for next year. Please read on for more information.

This rest of this article will address the information that the Board of Trustees has been presented over the last few months regarding the district’s budget situation and whether one or two buildings should remain open.
