Alcohol Can Damage Teen Brains

By Adele Stenson, Pondera County MSU Extension
Dutton Country Courier

There is a mindset among some folks that suggests that partying is something teens need to do – a right of passage on their way to adulthood. Brain research shows just the opposite – that partying can actually cause brain damage to the developing brain. I have just a few examples of how alcohol affects the developing brain, from information provided by Gateway Community Services specialist, Collette Steiner.

Different areas of the brain develop at different rates in humans. The brain stem is the most developed at birth because it allows us survive – it’s where our most basic survival instincts reside, but other areas of the brain continue to develop into early to mid-adulthood.

While the brain is maturing is can be affected either positively or negatively by environmental factors. Alcohol and drug use can cause lasting damage, while positive experiences can help the brain develop to its full potential.

Donations Sought For Dutton Cemetery

Due to circumstances at the Teton County level and beyond our control, the Dutton Cemetery Board has been notified that funding for our cemetery and the other county cemeteries will be severely restricted for this year and probably the next two to four years. This is unfortunate, but an opportunity to do what we can with what we have. The expenses that will be paid are water, electricity, essential repairs on equipment and wages for our sexton. We will not be funded for flowers, fertilizer, new equipment or any other expense.

We would like to have flowers in the brick planters so last night at the regular board meeting, we voted to accept donations to cover this expense. There will be a container at the Dutton Public Library for this. The approximate amount to cover the flowers for the planter is $150.00. We need to buy flowers by May 21st. We thank you for your spare change and will spend the summer being frugal! Donations may also be sent to Jean Harman, our very patient and hard-working secretary-treasurer. We welcome visitors to our meetings, which are held every 2nd Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Dutton United Methodist Church.

Dutton/Brady Girls Lean Toward Longer Dresses for Prom

By Ashley Thom
Dutton Country Courier

Prom_corsage_small_2

For the Dutton/Brady Prom of 2008, short dresses have been in style, but as I asked students around the school, most girls preferred a more poofy and longer dress.

Sarah Workman said, “I prefer a long poofy dress over a short dress because its prom and you need to go all out. You need to dress royal and if you’re in a short dress you don’t look as nice, you look more skanky then royal.”

When you get a longer prom dress it looks a lot nicer and it’s more elegant. A majority of the girls did prefer a longer, yet poofy dress, but there were a few who preferred a long but tight dress.

Maria Thom said she preferred a tighter prom dress because she said it showed her curves more. I would rather wear a poofy dress because I feel that it looks nicer then a short one. Maybe for a homecoming dance I would wear a shorter one, but not for prom.

This year’s prom will be held on April 19th at the Dutton Legion Hall.

A photographer will be available to take portraits at 7:00 PM and the Grand March will occur at 8:00 PM. The theme is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

To partake in the magical mood of the acclaimed Chocolate Factory, contact a junior for your personal invitation and golden ticket. Ticket prices are $25.00 for a couple and $15.00 for a single. Picture packages are either $25.00 or $35.00. Forms will be at the prom to fill out.

Dutton/Brady Preschool/Kindergarten Screening April 22

The Dutton/Brady Public School is having a Preschool/Kindergarten Screening April 22 at the Dutton/Brady Elementary School from 8:30 to 11:00. The screening is open to all children from birth through kindergarten age whether they will be attending public or private schools. Areas screened (based on age) are vision, hearing, speech, fine motor, gross motor, and concepts.

Children are not labeled as a result of their performance during screening. If a child shows up as having a difficulty in any of the areas screened, recommendations are made to the parents regarding the need for further evaluation and/or things they can do at home to help their child. Even though children have been screened in previous years, it is strongly recommended that they be screened again. As a child gets older, he/she goes through many physical and developmental changes and it is very important to monitor growth.
Any parent having questions regarding the screening or to arrange for an appointment should call the Dutton/Brady office at 476-3424.

Dutton/Brady Girls Lose Close First Tourney Game

By Courtney Lowery
Dutton Country Courier

The Dutton/Brady Diamondbacks lost a hard-fought game against Heart Butte 50-57 Friday night in their second District 10C tournament game in Cut Bank.

Heart Butte was a powerhouse from the three-point line, but Dutton/Brady stayed within at least 10 points and was within striking distance most of the game -- thanks to scrappy defense from Ellie Duty, great ball handling from Carissa Storle, important plays from Ashley Thom and Breanna Dahlman and some key shots from Traci Brumwell and Keely Michel.

With seven minutes left to play, Keely hit a 3-pointer to tie the game, but that was the closest the Diamondbacks would come for the rest of the night, despite a spectacular back and forth, several fast breaks off of steals and several clutch free throws.

Junior Ellie Duty was the MHSAA player of the game for the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks will now fight their way back through the bracket for third place at best, unless there is a challenge game.

Dutton/Brady defeated Power 53-42 Thursday to meet the Warriors Friday.

Scoring was as follows:
Dutton/Brady: Traci Brumwell, 16; Ellie Duty, 13; Keely Michel, 8; Carissa Storle 7; Ashley Thom 4; Breanna Dahlman 2.

Heart Butte: Kitty Vance 18; Steph Tail Feathers 10; Rose Wild Gun 10; Talia Gaurdipee 8; Alica Day Chief 5; Angie Bullshoe 4; Jessie Spotted Eagle 2.

Senior night. I couldn't wait for it to come. It meant just that much longer until graduation and until the end of my high school career.

But now I'm not sure I'm ready.

I was told to choose one school-related memory for senior night but there are too many and every time I read my memory it seems so insignificant compared to others. Yet I still keep the same memory.

Graduating classes in small towns vary greatly in size, but the friendships made are always huge. I have had the privilege of having a small class and making five great friends that I will never forget. Three of us have been together for the past thirteen long years and the other two have been here for the hectic years of high school.

Cody, Carissa, and I started together way back in kindergarten and together have slowly watched our class size diminish from the original eleven to the graduating five. We have been through thick and thin together. I am not going to say that things have always been perfect, that we never fought, and that we always hung out together; because that is not true and no one is ever that perfect. We have always gotten along and been friends, but let me tell you there have been a number of fights and words exchanged – just like a family. However, after every battle we always made up and resumed our fun together.
